Here’s how it works!
Appointment for an adult:
Getting Started:
To get started, book an adult assessment phone consultation. If you've been referred by another medical professional, you can skip this step and proceed to the “comprehensive evaluation” section below. After scheduling, you’ll receive a questionnaire. Completing it in advance will help me better understand your needs, so we can have a more productive phone conversation. The phone call is important because I want to ensure we can offer the right services before moving forward.
Comprehensive Evaluation:
If we determine that you have a dysfunction within the scope of practice, the next step is to schedule a comprehensive exam. This exam typically lasts 1.5 to 3 hours and includes an in-depth discussion about myofunctional therapy, your daily practices/habits, and your medical history. The clinical portion of the evaluation involves taking photos and videos of facial expressions, movements, as well as assessments of breathing and swallowing while eating and drinking. The fee for this exam is $395.
Treatment & Appointments:
After the exam, you will receive a personalized treatment plan based on the information from the assessment appointment. Treatment consists of targeted exercises or physical therapy for the muscles that are located below the eyes and above your shoulders. Appointments are $127 each and are usually scheduled every 2 to 4 weeks. Most clients typically require about 12 appointments, though this can vary depending on individual progress and compliance.
Appointment for a child:
Getting Started:
To begin, schedule a child assessment phone consultation. If you've been referred by another medical professional, you can skip this step and proceed to the “comprehensive evaluation” section below. After scheduling you will receive a questionnaire, which helps determine whether your child may have any myofunctional concerns. Misty will review the responses and be prepared to discuss them with you during the scheduled phone appointment. During the call, you’ll decide if myofunctional therapy could be beneficial for your child, and if so, we will schedule a comprehensive evaluation.
Comprehensive Evaluation (Part 1):
The first in-person visit will be the "Discovery Visit." During this visit, we will conduct a thorough evaluation that includes:
· A clinical examination of your child’s mouth, throat, and airway
· Photos and videos of your child performing various tongue movements, as well as eating and drinking
· Measurements of the mouth and airway
The evaluation will last between 1.5 to 3 hours
Additional Steps:
Pre-Appointment Preparation:
After scheduling your first appointment, I will send you a HIPAA-compliant folder where you can upload videos of your child eating and drinking during mealtime. If you can also capture videos of him/her snacking, that would be helpful.
You will also receive a short questionnaire to fill out before the appointment.
Follow-up Appointment:
After the first appointment, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment (without your child present) within the same week or the next to review his/her medical history, discuss general habits, and go over my observations. During this follow-up, I will also explain the details of myofunctional therapy and answer any questions.
Plan of Action:
Once all the information is gathered, I will compile everything into a detailed summary and share it with you. If necessary, I will refer your child to any other medical specialists for further care. After this, we can begin the treatment plan, including regular therapy sessions and daily exercises.
Treatment & Appointments:
After the exam, you will receive a personalized treatment plan based on the information from the assessment appointments. Treatment consists of targeted exercises or physical therapy for the muscles that are located below the eyes and above the shoulders. Appointments are $127 each and are usually scheduled every 2 to 4 weeks. Most clients typically require about 12 appointments, though this can vary depending on individual progress and compliance.
Insurance
Please note that I do not accept insurance, and myofunctional therapy is generally not covered by most dental or medical insurance plans. However, you can use an HSA card and/or seek reimbursement for services.
How long does it take?
Misty specializes in helping both children and adults address muscle patterning habits, including those related to mouth breathing. She will assess your facial and tongue muscles and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. Typically, treatment involves roughly 12 therapy sessions, along with a few minutes of daily practice exercises. During your comprehensive evaluation, the severity of your symptoms will be assessed to help determine the most appropriate course of treatment.
Collaboration:
Myofunctional therapy is often a collaborative approach to addressing your underlying concerns, and we frequently work alongside other healthcare providers to help you achieve your goals. Depending on your specific needs, this team may include dentists, orthodontists, oral surgeons, ENT specialists, sleep doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and nutritionists.
